#22 Thorsten:

Thorsten Leibenath is currently the Sports Director at Ratiopharm Ulm, which is currently a German BBL as well as Eurocup team. Before he became a Sports Director in 2019 he was the Head Coach at Ulm since 2011 where he was successful and earned “Coach of the Year” honors in 2012 & 2017. His team also holds the longest winning-streak in the BBL, which amounts to 27 wins in a row during the 2016/17 season. 

Thorsten started his Head Coach career with the Scottish Rocks in 2006 before returning to Germany the following season and continued his career in Giessen, Artland, Osnabrueck before heading to Ulm.

Today, he talked to me about the challenges of a young Head Coach, dealing with veterans, finding common grounds, earning respect and having an identity as a coach. We had a great conversation that included topics such as ‘winning streaks’, handling conflicts with players, biggest lessons learned from being a Sports Director, seeing things from a different angle and much more.
